The simple things of joy!

Love the simple things that can make a child so giddy...

Like my son shopping at Home Town Hardware earlier today. We went in for a few Christmas things and he saw a box of candy canes. He'd just confiscated change from where my husband empties his pockets when he comes in from work and it was burning a hole in his pocket. He knew he had "about $2" (which was $1.92 to be exact...) Anyway, we set the things we were going to buy on the counter and I realized my money was in the car. I said "we're going to the car to get money" to which he replied excitedly "Mommy! *I* have money!" I explained that it wasn't going to cover our purchases but thanked him - and then - he looked at the nice cashier and said "whatever you do, don't beep the candy canes. I'm going to buy them with *my* money when we get back!" and he did! When we got back to the register, all my items had been rung up and I paid. He took his box of candy canes and his pocket full of change and went to a different register to buy them. He was over the top with glee that he was doing it all by himself!

As he was going to bed tonight, he recounted the joy we'd had today and what topped his list? Buying candy canes ALL by himself with HIS own money! and you know what? He even got a receipt! THAT was the highlight - who wudda thunk?!
